Charles Cusick Smith was born in Glasgow, and studied at Glasgow School of Art and Post Graduate at The Slade School of Art London.
Internationally Charles has designed many Operas and Ballets including: Giselle for the Greek National Ballet, Giselle for English National Ballet, Romeo and Juliet, The Nutcracker, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliachi and Giselle and Three Musketeers in Estonia; Nabucco, Aida, Don Carlos, The Wall, Ottello, Der Rosenkavalier and Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliachi in Germany and Il Trovotore and Spartacus in Hong Kong. In France Ballet du Toulouse Casse – Noisette Dec 2011 and Alice in Wonderland Dec 2010 . In Slovenia The Nutcracker. Costumes for Romeo and Juliet for 15 degrees East in the Seed Cathedral Shanghai Expo 2010
The European premieres of Follies and Pacific Overtures. Designs for Sweeney Todd (Best Production 1990 TMA), For the Pop Band Boyzone “ Something Else Tour “ and Rock Around the Dock (Granada TV).
His Musical design credits in the UK include the Co- Design of Oklahoma , Guys and Dolls,, Hot Stuff, Heavenly Bodies, West Side Story, Slice of Saturday at Night, Chicago, Rock Hard, Hold Tight It’s 60’s Night, Company, In the Midnight Hour, The World Premiere,s of Cliff the Musical,Dusty and Ole Blue Eyes
Recent productions include Heartbreak House and Outlying Islands for, Passing Places, The Life of Stuff, Bus Stop,, Nana Pitlochry Festival Theatre (Pitlochry Festival Theatre 2007), Three Musketeers (2006) and The Nutcracker (2007) (both for NBT) and SNG Maribor and Estonia National Ballet
In Germany The Co-designs for HELLO DOLLY , SPAMALOT , CASSE_ NOISETTE and ALICE IN WONDERLAND for Ballet du Capitole
Charles was twice awarded for his designs in the UK most notably the T.M.A. “Best Designer” 1993 and the Evening News Award “Best Designer” 1986.
