The Dutch National Ballet occupies a leading position in the cultural scene of the Netherlands and abroad. With 80 dancers and a total of 125 members of staff, it is by far the largest dance company in the Netherlands. Over the years, the Dutch National Ballet has developed into one of the most respected ballet companies in the world. In the 2011-2012 season, the company is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary.

The Dutch National Ballet is an international company with talented dancers from thirty different countries, many of whom give regular guest performances with prestigious companies abroad.

Every year, the company gives around 70 performances in Amsterdam and at least 25 performances in other theaters in the Netherlands and abroad.

Most of the performances have live accompaniment from the symphony orchestra Holland Symfonia.One of the great ballet companies gaining worldwide acclaim in press and audiences.
Dutch National Ballet was formed in 1961 from a merger between the Amsterdams Ballet and the Nederlands Ballet.
Dutch National Ballet is the only classical ballet company in the Netherlands.
Repertory of HNB is very divers ranging from full-length classical ballets to contemporary and modern works.
Company has currently 3 house choreographers:
Hans van Manen (worldwide acclaimed Dutch choreographer),
Krysztof Pastor (currently as well artistic director of Polish National Ballet) and
Ted Brandsen (Artistic Director of HNB).
Company as well commissions works by leading choreographers of today.
HNB has one of the largest repertories of ballets by George Balanchine.
Company encourages creativity by creating yearly workshops and numerous acclaimed choreographers emerged from the ranks of the company.

The Dutch National Ballet gave its first performance on 16 September 1961. Now, fifty years' on, it is one of the top international companies and a respected art institution in the Netherlands. So there is plenty of reason to dwell in the 2011/2012 season on this golden anniversary and on the company's developments over the years. But there is also plenty of reason to look ahead, by presenting new creations that provide a refreshing look at the future of dance.

Over the past fifty years, the Dutch National Ballet has presented countless new works and succeeded in engaging leading choreographers from around the world. So this programme focuses on the three current resident choreographers (Hans van Manen, Krzysztof Pastor and artistic director Ted Brandsen), leading international choreographers such as Alexei Ratmansky (Don Quichotte and On the Dnieper), Christopher Wheeldon and David Dawson, former resident choreographer with the company.
