Carolina Ballet was founded in 1997 under the direction of Robert Weiss.

Company is reknown for i's repertory of narrative ballets
Terry Teachout said in the Washington Post “the best story ballets of the past quarter-century are currently being choreographed by Robert Weiss in Raleigh”; the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung praised Messiah when Carolina Ballet performed it in Budapest, Hungary saying “choreography Europe needs to see”; and Roy Dicks wrote in his review of Robert Weiss’ Romeo and Juliet “there are not enough accolades in my arsenal to accurately describe Romeo and Juliet, it was a triumph on several levels.”

Company has as well a large repertory of ballets by George Balanchine.

Company went from 20 members when founded to 38 (29 professional dancers 7 apprentices and 2 trainees).
