DAVID MAKHATELI

David is a graduate of the Tbilisi State Choreographic Institute of Vakhtang Chaboukiani and the Royal Ballet Upper School Vaganova Syllabus. He started training at the age of ten with his father Nikoloz Makhateli (Ex-Principal Dancer Tbilisi Opera Ballet Theatre, now Professor / Choreographer ) and later Levan Mkhitaryan, Boris Rakhmanin (Bolshoi Ballet Academy), legendary Soviet-Georgian dancer Vakhtang Chaboukiani and German Zamuel.
Mr. Makhateli is a winner of International Ballet Competitions in Lausanne (Switzerland) “Prix Espoir”, Moscow Diaghilev International Ballet Competition (Russia) 1st Place Junior division and Diploma at the International Ballet Competition in Paris (France). In February 2008 he was a recipient of a "Brilliance of the XXI Century" award with a fellow dancers at the Gala des Etoiles du XXIe Siècle – in New York, Lincoln Center and a Star Medal of St. Vladimir.
After Graduation he was offered a contract with the Birmingham Royal Ballet (United Kingdom), year later moved to Dutch National Ballet in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and then accepted a Soloist position with Houston Ballet (USA), becoming a Principal Dancer shortly after. He taught Master classes in schools in US and for National Ballet of Panama (Panama).
Mr. Makhateli is known worldwide and has performed in Russia (Moscow, St.Petersburg, Kazan), Japan (Tokyo, Osaka), Europe, United States, Brazil, Cuba, China, Korea, Panama, Georgia and in United Kingdom for her Royal Highness the Queen and the Royal family.
In February 2010, Mr. Makhateli was invited as a guest principal by Carla
Fracci to perform role of “Albrecht” to Evgenia Obraztsova’s Giselle in Fracci’s production of Giselle at the
Teatro Opera di Roma and in July same year was invited by Nina Ananiashvili to join the National Ballet of
Georgia on tour in USA and Taiwan 2010 – 2011 and dance the role of Albrecht in Alexei Fadeechev’s
production of Giselle & Prince in Swan Lake. In March 2011 was invited to Finnish National Ballet by Kenneth
Greve (Artistic Director) to perform Des Grieux next to Tamara Rojo’s Manon in Sir Kenneth
MacMillan’s “Manon”
Before joining The Royal Ballet in 2003 he was invited as a Guest Artist to dance the roles of Des Grieux opposite to Jamie Tapper’s Manon and Romeo to Miyako Yoshida’s Juliet in Kenneth Macmillan’s "MANON" and "ROMEO and JULIET" at the
Royal Opera House. Mr. Makhateli has partnered numerous Prima Ballerinas among them are: Nina Ananiashvili, Svetlana Lunkina of Bolshoi Ballet, Darcey Bussell, Tamara Rojo, Marianela Nunez, Miyako Yoshida, Roberta Marquez of Royal Ballet, Polina Semionova of Berlin Staatsopera, Alina Somova and Evgenia Obraztsova, Maya Dumchenko of Mariinsky
Ballet, Mizuka Ueno of Tokyo Ballet.
Mr. Makhateli is currently a Principal Dancer of the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden in London and Artistic Director / Adviser of the Ensemble Productions. Together with Ensemble Productions organized Gala Performances in the Royal Opera House “Tribute to Diaghilev” and “Homage to Nureyev” at the London Coliseum.
In 2010 Mr. Makhateli was asked to organize “Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev” in Athens at the Herod Atticus Roman Amphitheatre.
Later in April 2011 he organized International Gala with Stars in Honor of Maya Plisetskaya “AVE MAYA” at the Megaron Concert Hall, Athens, Greece, involving stars from Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theaters, Paris Opera Ballet, Royal and English National Ballet’s and Bolshoi’s Legendary Prima Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. On May 15th he organized with Ensemble Productions Gala in a memory of Galina Ulanova. Mr. Makhateli was Artistic Director of the Gala with Bolshoi Superstar Vladimir Vasiliev.
